Black Mirror: Backlash against writer inspired episode

A sadistic version of The X Factor where contestants perform for their own freedom. An immersive experience where criminals are subjected to the same terrors they inflicted on their victims, in front of a baying audience. A grotesque cartoon demagogue using TV and social media to obtain power. Over two Channel 4 series and a feature-length Christmas special , Black Mirror has depicted unpleasant scenarios from the not-too distant future, in a way that has at times felt almost eerily prophetic. Four years before the lurid piggate allegations about David Cameron came to light, there was The National Anthem, a Black Mirror episode where the prime minister is forced to have relations with a farmyard animal. The more horrible it gets, the funnier I find it, and then you know that will translate into a Black Mirror story. Some stories take place in the far future, others in a world mostly resembling our own.

More than anything, the episode is a story about demanding accountability from the all-consuming apps and all-powerful tech companies that fill our lives, and how futile that process can be. The episode follows Chris played by Andrew Scott , an Uber driver who parks his vehicle outside the office of the social-media company Smithereen every day, looking to pick up a particular sort of customer.

After one trip proves abortive—the person visiting the office was just meeting up with a friend—Chris spots Jaden Damson Idris , a well-dressed, wheelie-bag-toting Smithereen employee on his way to the airport. Chris picks him up, takes him to a remote location, and sticks a gun in his face, only then realizing that Jaden is actually an intern just a week on the job. Everyone looks so fucking young! How is anybody supposed to have a sense of the fucking hierarchy? In between is a lot of stalling, much of it centered around classic hostage tropes the panicked cops, the slick negotiator, the snipers looking for a shot through their scopes.

Scott throws his whole heart into the big, emotional monologue at the end of the episode explaining what caused him to snap an errant phone notification from the Smithereen app caused him to crash his car, killing his wife. Bauer can try to explain why his invention has become so addictive and overwhelming, but he barely understands the phenomenon himself at this point.

A newfangled, potentially disastrous technology pops up in each installment, giving the series a healthy sense of cohesion, but the four seasons aired so far could not be more all over the map. Such a varied palette of styles and stories means that the series is naturally hit or miss. It delivers far more hits than misses, but hashing out which episode hits hardest can be helpful for a newbie who wants to customize their viewing order.

The episode plows through a set of emotional conditions requiring the utmost delicacy and sensitivity, first going for awkward laughs and then just awkwardness, ultimately melting into a pile of unearned sap.
